Overall, an interesting and informative book. The author attempts to explain the early history of Japan, (of which there were few records), and from where Japan's original inhabitants came.A little hard going in some chapters; I found myself skimming the text. Written in 1918, it uses words like `Nay', and `Sooth' and lots of use of `the former' and `the latter', and lots of `broken' paragraphs with commas in the middle, requiring the reader to keep checking backwards, which I found a bit irritating. I had to keep an English dictionary handy to check the meanings of some strange mediaeval words.
The massive influence of Chinese culture into Japan, including Buddhism, politics, literature, art, writing using Chinese ideograms as well as copper currency; the use of wooden and eventually metal type to print books is explained. Interestingly, it also explains why the Christian missionaries were thrown out of Japan, why some of the arrogant Buddhist temples were destroyed, why Shintoism is really a philosophy and not a religion, and why the country was closed down to foreigners, except for some Dutch traders.
It explains how the military Shoguns lost power and the Emperor became the focus of the new Japan, and how Japan has entered into a new era of representative government from about 1900.
It's very useful to have a fairly large scale map of Japan at your side while reading the book to 'follow the action'.
The book is very good value for 0.99 cents (Kindle edition)

An introduction to the history of Japan Katsurō Hara 9781176720268 Books Reviews
This book tell us faithfully the truth of Japanese History.
Great book! Informative and thorough.
Very interesting. An old book but written from a Japanese perspective.
Good, but dated. Surprisingly unbiased on certain issues. Interesting to read an insider perspective. version flowed smoothly. Also some dated or phonetic spellings.
The reader will slug through two centuries only to go back one then go forward again. I have really expanded my vocabulary.
